Why the new Nick Cave album is awesome
I've realized something about Nick Cave: as he puts out new albums, i keep getting more interested in his new ones, and less interested in his old ones. I don't know if that says more about me or him, but it's pretty great. After all, can you imagine saying the same thing of a band like The Pixies? This became especially true when he released No More Shall We Part a few years ago. It seemed like a big stride past his preceding albums; he started replacing gloomy love ballads with gloomy doom-laden stories and incorporating the feel of rock 'n roll in place of post-punk gothy-ness.
That's what his new one Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! is all about. Most songs are built on taut beats that might remind you a little of krautrock and The Stooges at the same time. Drawing from his other recent project, Grinderman, there's plenty of rawkus guitars and spacey loops on top of the drums, but the focus remains the vocals. The best things going here is Nick's gift for ambiguous, creepy, even weird little stories that nevertheless are compelling.
If you're a lapsed Nick Cave fan, this might be one to check out. The songs are strong, the sounds are cool, and his band, as ever plays with impressive control and plenty of snarl.

yeah, he was in 'wings of desire'
and he wrote 'the proposition'
so he can do things over various mediums that are just as good as his music.
so i hate him for it.
i want them artists pigeon-holed damnnit!

hmm it must have been wings of desire...although oddly enough that's one of those movies that i remember more for its supposed goodness than for its actual content.
withnail and i i remember much more of sadly.

you didn't like withnail and i? it's one of my favorite movies to watch! i actually spent a hilarious amount of money for the original ralph steadman poster... just have to get around to framing it one day... sigh...

jon, i'm wit you on wings of desire. it was really good to high-school chris, but it's hard for me to love wenders these days. it's pretty amazing how much more grim films have gotten since the 90s, so maybe i should appreciate wenders more for making movies that try to be uplifting.
nick cave was also in Johnny Suede with Brad Pitt. Pitt is a 50s rock n roll singer, and Nick Cave is an evil 50s rock n roll singer. look for that scene on youtube and skip the rental.
oh yeah, he was in that Assassination of Jesse James movie, also with Brad Pitt. and that one was a lot better. though i'm not a fan of The Proposition. i liked it at first, but it lost it's charm for me.
