Spiderman 3 (2007)
I could basically rename this entry "James Franco is the greatest actor alive" because he truly is the star of the movie. The intensity, the tenacity, basically his superior histrionics propel this movie to heights unknown. But more on that later.
So this movie picks up where it left off as Spiderman being the hero of the city. So we got "feel good" Spidey at the start. And we all know what's gotta be done to people who feel full of themselves; you gotta kick them down a few notches. But seeing as this is a superhero movie, it's obvious that the Wallcrawler is able to elevate himself again. The path he takes to get there, I won't elaborate because that will spoil the movie. So just go and watch it whenever you got the time.
On the finer details of the film: Symbiote-Affected-Parker could possibly be the greatest character interpretation ever done by an actor. Parker, at that point in the movie, looks like he belongs in The Cure. The hair alone is worth the price of admission. But the way he carries himself has a certain savoir faire that all men strive to be. It really was both humorous and hard to watch at the same time.
But Tobey's performance is clearly outdone by James Franco, aka the greatest actor of our generation. The way he enjoys a slice of Pie made me want to eat pie right after the movie. And that face of his could have been inspired by the greek gods: with his wrinkly smile and severe ptosis, how can the ladies resist? But his acting, my God the acting, really made me believe again. Believe in what, I have no idea, but I believe.
But for a serious critique, there was one thing that I truly didn't like in this movie, Eddie Brock and the voice of Venom. Brock should be a prick with the build of a brick shithouse, not some jokey little douche. And then when he becomes Venom (if you didn't know that, sorry to spoil it for you) his voice should change when he IS venom. Seriously, nothing is more upsetting than Venom striking fear in your heart as he comes at you only to have all that intimidation disappear once you got Eric Foreman's voice talking to you. For goodness sake, couldn't they synth his voice more to make it scary? But the random shrills and the overall look of Venom was cool otherwise.
Overall, I was entertained by this movie. That, I can't deny. Though I did look at my watch once as it started to fell long in the middle. I'd say Spidey 2 remains the best in the series, probably because we had angsty Parker and not feel good Parker. And this movie had a ton of cheese in it, which is both a positive and a negative. I recommend watching it in the theaters just to see the fight scenes and such, but just one time only in theaters. This film does not merit multiple big screen viewings.
